Gears of War Movie Gets Turbocharged: David Leitch at the Helm and Script in Motion

Los Angeles, August 2025 — The long-awaited Gears of War movie is firmly rolling forward, turbocharged with fresh creative momentum and robust backing from Netflix and game developer The Coalition.

According to Polygon, Netflix has entered negotiations with acclaimed action director David Leitch—known for high-octane films like Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, and co-directing John Wick—to direct and produce the film alongside his producing partner and wife, Kelly McCormick, via their 87North Productions banner . The deal is not yet finalized, but these developments signal new life for a project that has lingered in development limbo for nearly two decades .

In addition, longstanding writer Jon Spaihts, whose credits include Dune, Prometheus, and Doctor Strange, remains on board to pen the screenplay—bringing valuable sci-fi cred and narrative heft to the adaptation .

David Leitch himself has now confirmed the project is actively in development. “We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it,” says McCormick, stressing the energy behind the project at both Netflix and The Coalition . They further noted that while the film won’t align with the 2026 release of the new game, Gears of War: E-Day, the goal is to create something that feels thematically relevant and timely .

Adding to the momentum, SuperHeroHype reports the scale of interest and excitement surrounding the project, highlighting the strong collaboration and creative synergy involved .

Currently, the film is slated as a Netflix exclusive, meaning it will likely premiere on the streaming platform as opposed to a theatrical release. There is no official release date or cast yet. Additionally, Netflix is developing an adult-oriented animated series, expanding the Gears universe beyond just the film .

Meanwhile, anticipation for the franchise continues to build: The remastered version of the original Gears of War game—Gears of War: Reloaded—is set to launch on August 26, 2025, debuting for the first time on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC . And in 2026, the franchise will mark its 20th anniversary, with the release of the new title Gears of War: E-Day on the horizon .
